July 2007... Mike's parents
continue to bring him to Winchester Rehab for Pool Therapy once a
week or as often as possible. Sometimes he gets in
the pool with his Dad if the therapists are on vacation etc.
For the summer time months we are so grateful that they put such
effort into faithfully trying to work with Mike each
week. Mike's leg is less sensitive and his ankle more flexible
since working in the pool. These are small improvements.
Of course he's still not able to stand on it, but with this type of
injury it takes a long time to make progress. It
seems the biggest benefit is keeping him from going
backwards. It's very good for him on many levels to keep
moving and standing up in the water. He is receiving a little
therapy at the home now for a while. We always wish to express
our thanks to everyone who contributes their time and energy to help
Mike.
Mike's parents try to get him out to the mall, a movie or over
to their home for a visit as often as possible. They have their
own set of health problems and cannot do as much as they would
like to. Please pray for us all.
May 4, 2007... Mike's sister Kathy came down
from New York to Winchester for the Apple Blossom Festival.
She was able to take him downtown to the Midway on Friday
for a couple of hours. He enjoyed playing games, winning
prizes, eating junk :) and talking with friends. Later
that evening Mike, Kathy and the Parents went out to the carnival so
he could play some of the games and win a few prizes there as
well. He did OK and had a good time.
Feb. 16, 2007... Mike had pool therapy
again today. Mike is fortunate to have this therapy most every
week - once a week. Lately, Mike is worring about some of
his friends because they have troubles. Please realize that
with his situation and mental health issues, he takes these things
very, very seriously and gets depressed. He has been unhappy lately
about everything in general. If you have time to give him a
call or a visit to cheer him up that would be grand. Please
remember when you discuss the ups and downs of your everyday life
with him, your troubles are magnified in his mind and he worries
about them tremendously.
Feb. 10, 2007... Mike continues with his
AquaTherapy in the Pool at the Winchester Rehabilitation
Center. He then went home to spend the night at his parents
house again. He was glad to get a good nights sleep.
It's very for him rare to be able to get a good nights rest at Care
Haven with all the noise that goes on all night in that nursing
home. (Other residents blast their TVs and hollar and moan and
wander the halls all night. It's a mad house!
ha!)
Dec. 31, 2006...Mike attended church at
SVBC again on New Years Eve. He then stayed the night
with his foks and rang in the New Year at "home" with his parents.
Dec. 24, 2006... Mike attended services
this morning at Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church with his
parents. They then met up with Kathy for lunch at Perkins. All
four were able to spend Christmas Eve together and open gifts
together as a family on Christmas
morning.
Nov. 25,
2006... Mike had pool therapy today with Anna &
her sister who is also an aquatic physicial therapist. He did
really well. Improvements are being seen especially
in the bicep of his upper left arm. His left
leg is getting stonger as well. Later that evening, Mike
and his sister, Kathy went to a movie and then did a
little Christmas shopping at the Apple Blossom Mall. After
that, they then went to Pargo's for dinner which all made for a
very busy day!
Nov. 23,
2006... Mike, his parents and sister were
all able to enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner together at home
today. First time in a long time. :)
Oct. 28,
2006... HAPPY
BIRTHDAY TO MIKE, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MIKE, HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIG
MIIIII-IIIIIKE....HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MIKE!
Mike celebrated his
birthday with TWO parties! The first was held this
morning at the therapy pool after this therapy
session. The second was held at Care Haven in the
evening. He enjoyed visiting with his friends.
Oct. 7, 2006... Mike was able
to attend his 10 Year High School Class Reunion. His
sister came down from New York to accompany him. see PHOTOS
Sept 1,
2006... Mike's pool therapy continues to bring small
improvements. Although he still cannot walk, etc, he is
getting stronger in his left leg and of course as you know he gets
around in his wheelchair. He continues to needs help dressing,
help with personal grooming and hygiene and with other general
things. He continues to take quite a lot of medications
24 hrs a day which of course need to be strictly
administered. He has come a long way but
progress is slow. We thank the Lord everyday for any progress
and for all of you that have helped us all along the way. Please
continue to keep him and us in your prayers and your calls and
visits are always welcome.
Aug. 5,
2006...Mike attended the wedding of
his friends Angela & Jeff today. You may remember that
he attended the wedding of Nikki & Ben last summer.
This makes 4 weddings - two in 2004, one in 2005 and now one in
2006. Thank you for inviting us to your celebrations! It's a
great outing for Mike and he always has such a wonderful time!
see PHOTOS.
May 9,
2006... Instead of a usual 'update,' here's a message from
Mike! "Hi
Everyone! I just wanted to say hello. I'm doing OK.
I miss you ALL! Come see me if you can, please !!!! Last
week, I went to a Gospel Rap concert during Apple Blossom. It
was really good. If you like Rap music, I highly
recommend the artist to you. His name is KJ-52.
This is a link to the article in the Winchester Star about
the concert. Check it out! http://snipurl.com/q8zw Later!
~Mike"
HAPPY EASTER,
HAPPY SPRING, HAPPY HAPPY EVERYTHING
!!!!
April 16, 2006... We are all doing well and hope
that you are too! I have put some new photos on the PHOTOS page of Mike and his
therapists.
Feb. 12,
2006... Mike is doing pretty well these days. He's
having therapy once a week in a pool. It is a pool for
therapy, with trained therapists and therapists in training.
He is really enjoying his time there and with them. Because of
that, he's doing very well with it. We are so grateful for
this. :) Also, Mike has moved to a new room, it is A11.
Jan. 2,
2006... HAPPY NEW YEAR! Mike had his first 2 day/night stay
at his parents home for the Christmas holiday. His sister
showed up and surprised him and visited for a few days as
well. Everyone unwrapped gifts together for the first time in
a long time. :) We hope your Holidays were Merry and Bright.
:)
Dec. 7,
2005... Mike has acquired a new roommate.
Unfortunately, this fellow is quite restless so Mike has had very
little rest and sleep for the past week so far. This has
caused Mike to be such a grumpy bear these
days. He is very down and disgruntled with everyone and
everything lately. We, his family, try our very hardest to
make things as good for him as possible and keep his spirits lifted,
but lately it just seems to be not enough. If you have time to
give him a call or stop by for a visit or have an idea to lift his
spirits it would be greatly appreciated.
Dec. 2, 2005... Mike has been receiving
a little bit of therapy through various avenues lately. An
answer to prayers but still a fraction of what we feel he
needs. We are very grateful for those therapists working with
him these days. :)
Dec. 1, 2005... Hey! I finally put a couple
of new pictures on the PHOTOS page. :)
Nov. 28, 2005... Mike
went to his parents house to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner there with
them. He also was able to attend church the following Sunday
morning at his home church, Shenandoah Valley Baptist.
Oct. 17,
2005... The Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church, which is
Mike's home church, came over to Care Haven Center to
have a program for the residents there. The Assistant Pastor
and family sang and the Senior Pastor gave a short message. Mike was
glad to see them.
Oct. 15,
2005... Mike was able to go on an outing with some of the
residents from Care Haven Center today. He attended a parade
in Martinsburg, I believe it was an Apple Harvest parade. He
is doing OK. I think he's lonely. Not too many visitors
lately. His birthday is coming up soon though and I think he's
looking forward to that and hoping for friends to come to see him on
that day.
Sept 10, 2005...
Mike went to the Winchester Rehabilitation Center's Annual
Picnic today. He really enjoyed seeing the nurses,
therapists and friends there. They thought he is doing
great!
Aug. 28,
2005... Mike is feeling better now. He does
have headaches everyday. We believe that will continue
and sometimes it seems to us to be getting worse. This is the
biggest reason that he continues on the pain killers.
Aug. 20,
2005... The air conditioning unit in Mike's room conked out
and it was 82 degrees in there. Being that it was
intolerable and Care Haven didn't seem to care enough to try to
remedy the situation, his parents had to go over and get him and
bring him to their home for the night. They all attended
church together at Shenandoah Valley Baptist the next
morning. Once a new air conditioning unit was installed
in his room, he was able to return to Martinsburg.
Aug. 6, 2005... Mike was able to attend
his friends Nikki and Ben Brown's wedding today.
Congratulations to the bride & groom. We wish them all the
best.
July
20-29, 2005... Poor Mr. Mike is quite sick and has been
since last Wednesday. :( He is not a happy camper these
days. He and his parents even spent a night in the Emergency
Room a couple of days ago, but as of yet, he's still quite
sick. We ask for your prayers.
July
3-4, 2005... For the first time since his accident (almost
2 years) Mike spent a night at home in his own bed. This was
an overnight visit. He spent the day with his parents.
They went to the mall (of course!) and to dinner and then to see the
fireworks display. Mike stayed the night and spent some of the
next day there as well.
May 1, 2005... Mike and his parents went to
“Weekend in the Park.” (Although, I think it has a different name
now. ??) He then went to the Apple Blossom Mall for lunch and
then to his parents house for a nap. (I think the parents
needed the nap most!!) After dinner there, they then took him
back to Care Haven.
April
29, 2005... Mom & Dad took Mike to the Circus! He
had been looking forward to this for weeks! We want to say a
very big THANKS to Wayne E. for helping Dad get the wheelchair
through the gravel. Without Wayne’s help, Dad likely would not
have been able to get Mike in to the event at all. After
the Circus, Mike and his parents went to dinner at Perkins and then
later to the Carnival at Ward’s Plaza. Mike played a couple of
games there and won a few prizes too!
March
27, 2005... Mike went with his parents to church for Easter
Sunday services at Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church. He had a
good time and was happy to see everyone and attend the
service.
March
25, 2005... Mike’s parents purchased a used
Handicap-equipped Mini-Van. It helps to have this specially
equipped van to transport Mike to various places. It is still
not easy, but much better than his Father having to lift him in and
out of the old one! Mike is a big boy you know…hence the
name “Big Mike” J
March
24, 2005... Today Mike received his new
glasses! They work pretty well. He is able to see
so much better that he has not wanted to take them off! We are
so thankful that there has been some healing since the
accident.
March
21, 2005... Mike went to an optometrist today to be
examined and fitted for eye glasses. He has limited vision, mostly
in his left eye. As explained before, this is resulting from
the stroke which occurred at the time of the accident. He also has
astigmatism and is near sighted.
Hi Everyone...a great big THANK YOU for all who took the time
to attend the benefit concert on March 11th!
Your time, consideration and generosity is greatly
appreciated. Also, Mike had a wonderful time.
He enjoyed the music and all of the folks who stopped by to
talk with him. The attention did him a world of good.
Our thanks to SVBC, the Pastors, Members and staff there for
use of the church and for their participation. Further, we
wish to express our appreciation to the groups and their crews
for their great performances. And certainly a big thanks
to all of those wonderful folks at WTRM. And a very
special thank you must go to Cindy who saw a need and then took
action to do something about it. She is a very special
person, and we are very grateful for her hard
work.
Feb. 12, 2005... So sorry that
the website hasn't been updated for a while. My computer got
old and tired and pooped out on me. But...not to worry, the
new sleek and shiny replacement is here! Will have some
new updates for you soon, please stand by! And thank you all
so much for your continued prayers and concern.
Dec. 25,
2004... Mike, went home for a visit on Christmas
Day! His Dad picked him up about 11 am and he spent the whole
day at home. He ate lunch there and opened gifts, just like
old times. :) Several friends stopped by for a visit as
well. His parents took him back to Care Haven about
8 pm.
Dec. 15, 2004... Today, Mike had
his second eye exam by the Neuro-Ophthalmologist.
This type of Dr. looks at the eyes a bit differently than a
regular Optometrist or Ophthalmologist as they are looking for the
difficulties caused by trauma, diseases or defects in the brain,
etc. She said that he has permanent damage to both eyes
and he is learning to compensate for some it by tilting or turning
his head. An operation on the fourth nerve of the right
eye would be very touchy so instead he is to see an
optometrist and be fitted for special glasses with prisms in
them. One eye sits slightly higher than the other causing things to
be blurred and the color concept of the right eye is bad.
Further, his left field of vision is very limited.
We pray the glasses will be
helpful.
Nov. 30,
2004... Well, Mr. Mike has been is so much pain and made
such a fuss that the Dr has decided to remove the cast
altogether. Apparently, his leg goes through muscle spasms
throughout the day and night. These spasms are what
causes the leg to bend up so severely. Obviously, when the
muscle spasms now, it cannot 'go' anywhere since it is restricted by
the hard cast. This, of course, causes Mike pain and
discomfort. To alleviate that, the Dr had tried doubling his
pain medication (which he is always on anyhow for his continuous
headaches, etc) and adding a muscle relaxant. However, the
muscle relaxant is having a bad effect on his behavior, speech and
general consciousness. This is likely due to a build-up of it
in his system, but more due to it's reaction with all of the other
drugs that Mike is on continuously since his accident. So, the
cast has been removed and has been modified to make it into a
temporary brace that he can wear for intervals throughout the
day. Stay tuned!
Nov. 24,
2004... The first grade class of the
Winchester
Academy surprised Mike
this year with wonderful Thanksgiving Day cards that they had made
for him! He was able to
share them with his family, friends and residents at Care
Haven. You can visit
the PHOTOS page to see
the cards and credit to the students. This was a really nice gesture
and greatly appreciated.
Nov. 23, 2004... Mike had a trip over
to Winchester Rehab today to have a cast placed onto his left
leg. After giving the Botox a couple of weeks to take effect,
the therapist has tried to move Mike's leg out a bit and then they
placed a hard cast onto it in an attempt to hold it in that position
for a week. He will return next week to have this cast
removed, receive some therapy, and hopefully extend the leg a bit
further. If successful, they will then cast it again in that
position and repeat the process in another week. We shall
see! The Botox seems to be having an effect, but the knee
appears to be somewhat locked. We're not to happy to hear that
since there is little that can be done about it short of
surgery.
Nov. 11,
2004...Mike FINALLY got to go in for his Botox
injections. We are very excited to see if these will work to
help relieve the spacicity in his left leg. These injections
were placed into about 15 different locations all throughout his
left leg. You see, when Mike was injured, there was a
time or event that deprived his brain of significant oxygen.
This caused him to suffer a stroke. This stroke, along
with the damage that occurred to the brain by the massive
trauma, caused the left side of his entire body to be
paralyzed. This paralysis is present only because his
brain cannot communicate with that side of his body. At first,
that side of his body just lay dormant. Over time, he has
gotten back some use of it, such as, getting some movement
back on the left side of his face (to smile,) jaw (to chew,) neck (to hold up his head) and
throat (to swallow.)
Also he has
gained some stability in his trunk/core muscles so that he can
sit up again, rather than fall over and have to be held
upright. But, the problem with his limbs is that over time,
from not being moved and used on command from the brain...those
muscles have tightened into very small tight bands. That
tightening is called spacicity and has caused his left arm and left
leg to curl up and stay bent at all times. This, of course,
causes Mike a great deal of discomfort and makes it hard for him to
balance when he spends time in therapy trying to learn to stand on
his right left while the left leg is curled and sticking
up in the air!! It also causes problems for his caretakers,
making it difficult to bathe and dress him. It further causes
challenges in trying to transport him, etc. SO...Botox is a
substance that when injected into a muscle, will paralyze it.
First, remember that Mike's muscles are not presently paralyzed, the
problem is that they are not communicated with from the brain. The point of the Botox
injections is that if those muscles are now physically paralyzed,
hopefully they will lose their spacicity and smooth back out so then
Mike's leg will uncurl and be able to be straightened again.
If that happens, then first of all, therapists can work with it,
moving and exercising it again. This is something that is
currently impossible because it had gotten so tight that you CANNOT
move it, you CANNOT straighten it. Also, if the leg will relax
now, due to the Botox, a brace can be put on it to hold it straight
and straighten back out those muscles. So we have high hopes. However, the effects of
Botox takes weeks to begin to show and then only last 3 to 4
months. Therefore, this
is something that Mike would have to do maybe 3 to 4 times a
year. However, if the
injections are successful, the hope is that every time will cause
progress to the point that someday, the leg will stay straight and
he won’t need the injections any longer. We can hope to dream, but
that is the goal. And
goals are just dreams with deadlines, you know.
Oct. 28, 2004...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO
MIKE, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MIKE, HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIG
MIIIII-IIIIIKE....HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO
MIKE! We wish to thank everyone
who sent greetings and came to visit Mike and bring gifts and cards
and share in his special day. God Bless you
all!
Oct. 27th, 2004...
Tomorrow is Big Mike's Birthday! He is looking forward
to having as many of his friends visit as possible. If you
have time, we sure hope you'll stop by for a visit.
Hurry! There's gonna be CAKE !! LOLOL :)
Oct. 24th, 2004...
This weekend we've said our good-byes and buried our dear Uncle
Elwood. He was our father's last living
brother. Mike was able to make it to family night at the
funeral home and visit with our family. Although we certainly
wish it were under better circumstances, it was good to see everyone
and for Mike to get to visit with some of the family who have not
seen him in a while, etc. Although he also wanted to attend
the funeral the next day, it was held at 11am and was too early for
us to arrange everything to get him ready and transported over
there. Sometimes, there is just not enough of us or enough
time to accomplish everything with him. We could really use
some help with Mike but just don't know where to turn for
that. It's days like this when we wish we had more siblings -
more hands and hearts to help. :)
Sept. 10, 2004... Mike is doing pretty
well, he asked me today if his mailing address is posted on the
website. When I asked him why he'd asked me that, he
said...."Do you think people could send me some
mail?" I said, "Well sure. Any particular type of
mail that you'd like?" And he replied, "Yeah,
pictures." So...here is a request for pictures. I'm
sure any kind of pleasant picture or picture postcard would be
welcome. Mike gets quite lonely and bored....as you can
imagine. And...he'd love to hear from you. Yes,
you.
Aug.14, 2004... Mike remains at
Care
Haven
Center in
Martinsburg,
WV. He is doing
pretty well, but has been a little down the last few days. If
you have the time to give him a call or drop a card in the mail to
him or stop by for a visit, he would really appreciate it. He
has had procedures on both big toes over the past couple of
months. So far they seem to be successful but he is still
healing. He has had his first eye exam by a
Neuro-Ophthalmologist. This type of Dr. looks at the eyes a
bit differently than a regular Optometrist or Ophthalmologist as
they are looking for the difficulties caused by trauma, diseases or
defects in the brain, etc. As we feared, Mike has suffered
extensive damage to his eyes due to his accident. We'll know
more after a few more exams which will happen a few months apart in
order to determine if his eyes will change as time goes on and his
brain continues to heal and recover. Mike was also
scheduled for Botox injections into his left leg to try to relieve
some of the severe spacicity that he has there. But...alas,
the request for the Botox is still mired in red tape at the Medicaid
office as well as the requests for the wheelchair with lumbar
support. Unfortunately, due to the inefficiency of Medicaid,
the Dr's appointments for this week had to all be canceled.
As you can imagine, this is quite frustrating and
annoying. Please pray for the folks at Medicaid to get into
gear and move forward on these things.
July 6, 2004... I
just flew in from Dulles, and boy, are my arms tired!
yuk...yuk...yuk... :) Hi everyone, just back
from WV / VA again. Had a great visit. Mike was doing
grand. His spirits were up, he was feeling good and was
stronger than ever. We made 2 trips to the Apple Blossom Mall
on 2 separate days. He saw some friends there and took
pictures with quite a few. (see the PHOTOS page) You will
note that they are all female! As you can see, Mike remains
quite the ladies man! We had some quality family time
too. It was nice to see even more animation coming back into
the left side of his face. He also showed me how he is getting
a little bit of movement in his left arm. Also, a great big
thank you to the friends who gave Mike a Sega Genesis game
system. He is busy these days learning how to play this
with one hand. Not doing too bad so far! If anyone has
any old Sega Genesis games that they don't use anymore, he'd be glad
to have them. Much thanks to everyone for their care and
concern.
June 9,
2004... Mike is doing pretty well although he's been a bit
gloomy lately and a little cranky too. Living day-in and
day-out in a nursing home is certainly not the greatest
experience. Mike is in great need of 'cheerleaders' right
now. Friends and family who can take and make the time to
visit with him and work with him and encourage him. His
spirits need a boost. If you can find the time to send a card
or letter, or give him a call or best yet, stop by for a visit and
maybe play a game with him or draw with him, etc. Some sort of
activity to get him up and interested and involved in
something. He desperately needs to be up and active and
involved in things and we can only do so much ourselves. We
really need your help...please. A game of checkers or cards,
or catch or anything artistic or creative. Really, anything
positive and social. Even if it's just to get up and go down
to the Community Room to watch TV together or to the Therapy Room to
bounce the little ball around. [carefully! :) ] You get
the idea. Think of something...and just show up. He'll
be thrilled, I assure you.
June 8,
2004... Mike had his first real haircut in almost a year
today! We, of course, aren't counting the 3 times in the past
11 months when he's had his head (or part of his head) shaved for
various surgeries. Yes, it's the first time since his accident
that he's actually had the opportunity to grown enough hair to
warrant a haircut! He's quite proud. Thanks
Reggie. God Bless!
May 25, 2004...
I've just returned from another trip to VA / WV to see
Mike and family. My parents and I took him on 2 outings, 2
days in a row. On Sunday we took a drive and made 2 quick
visits with Aunts and Uncles who live close to Care
Haven. On Monday we went to the Martinsburg Mall where we
visited the Arcade and a few stores. Mike was able
to visit and chat with a friend who works at the Mall as
well. Both trips went pretty well although I must say, it's
quite a production and takes alot
of effort to get Mike into and out of the minivan, etc. It's
alot of work, done mostly by our Dad. Another highlight was
seeing Mike doing "stand-ups." This is one of the things he does in
therapy. He is trying to learn to stand on his right
leg. He holds onto a rail and stands up using his right arm
and leg to support himself. He can get completely up and down
by his own power. He needs someone to hold onto him as his
balance is still not so good. He can stand like this for over
3 minutes now. See the newest photo on the bottom of
the PHOTOS page of Mike
posing with friends for a picture and all are STANDING. GO
MIKE!!!
May 14,
2004... Today, Mike went on his first social outing since
his accident. He attended the wedding reception of one of
his friends. Other than some car trouble, (which caused him to
miss the ceremony) everything went fine and he had a great time. We
extend congratulations to the bride and groom!
Afterwards, Mike was determined to visit the Apple Blossom
Mall. "May as well, since I'm already in Winchester"
was his logic. He spent a good amount of time there going
through the mall and visiting several friends at various stores and
of course, his good friends at the Dream Machine Arcade. He
made it back to Care Haven by mid-afternoon and was still in high
spirits and full of energy when I spoke to him at early
evening. The parental units, however, were entirely exhausted
by the days events. Ha!
May 12,
2004... Mike continues to do pretty well. His
Drs and Nurses are working on trying to get his medication levels
straightened out. This is a constant issue, but is a little
more challenging lately with the recent changes in his
medication. Mike's blood is tested frequently to measure the
amount of medications/drugs in his system and to monitor their
levels. This is a delicate balance that can be easily upset by
the slightest thing, such as him not drinking enough water or
too much intake of caffeine (as in Cola!) or fat (as in junk
food!) At any rate, something so seemingly innocent can cause
the levels to reach unsafe areas. Fortunately, Mike does not
smoke, drink or do drugs as something like that could cause a fatal
seizure. Please continue to pray for Mike
daily.
Apr. 27,
2004... I've
just returned from a trip to VA & WV. Wow, Mike sure
looks great! He was all smiles while I was there and we had a
really good time visiting. We took him on an outing to the
Martinsburg Mall and really had fun. We were out
for about an hour. It was alot of energy for him to
use and he was really tired the next day. He's still unable to
ride in the car without getting ill as it will take time for his
equilibrium to rehabilitate. He's got a long way to go, but
his progress thus far is just amazing. Be sure to check out
the new PHOTOS
from the weekend.
Apr. 20,
2004... Mike has been doing a little better the past few
days. His mood has improved a little, I think due to some nice
weather and visits from several friends. Mike had a CT Scan
with contrast yesterday. However, due to an equipment
glitch, the results were not readily available for the Doctor to
review, so we will have to wait for his report. He did examine
Mike and was pleased at his progress since the last
surgery.
Apr. 12, 2004...
Mike is depressed and lonely these days. A visit from 2
friends helped to lift his spirits a little bit this
afternoon. If you can find the time for a visit, a phone call
or to send a postcard or email it is really helpful for him to
not feel forgotten! (BigMikesMessages@aol.com)
Apr. 9, 2004...
Mike's incisions from his most recent surgeries are healing well and
he is able to slowly resume his physical therapy. He is trying
to learn to ride in a car again so that he can get out and about a
little bit. You'd think that'd be easy, right? But it's
a very different thing than being transported in an ambulance. And
in his situation, it's a very big challenge for several
reasons. Please continue to send prayers our way and we wish
everyone a very Happy Passover or Easter Holiday!
Apr. 2,
2004... Mike has his follow-up visit and the 12 staples in
his stomach were removed. He also had a CT Scan yesterday, but
I have not learned the results of that yet. He made a visit to
Winchester Rehab today for an appointment and also got to visit some
of his friends there as well. He enjoyed getting to see them,
of course, as he really misses being at the Rehab.
Mar. 29, 2004...
Mike is doing pretty well. He will soon return to the Dr for
follow-up CT Scans, check-up and to have his staples out.
He's a little down in the dumps lately and could really use some
cheery visits from happy friends. Maybe you can make some
time to visit or call him. ?? He'd love to see or hear from
you.
Mar. 26,
2004... Mike has been returned again to Care Haven
Center where he continues with his recovery. Everything
appears to have gone well so far. He will have a follow-up
with his Dr in about a week. Thanks so much for your prayers
and concern.
Mar. 25, 2004...
After a delay, Mike was admitted to surgery this afternoon
where his stomach was opened again and his VP Shunt
re-started. The surgeon also drew the remaining fluid from his
head. He is currently (7pm) resting uncomfortably in his
room. He is in pain, uncomfortable, hungry and a bit cranky,
but doing well and making sense. He will be kept overnight for
observation. We hope for a peaceful night and a safe return to
Care Haven tomorrow.
Mar. 23, 2004...
On Thursday, Mike will once again be
admitted to Winchester Medical Center for yet another
surgery. This time to re-open his stomach and re-start his VP
shunt. Apparently, the attempt for it to remain closed is not
working out as he continues to collect spinal fluid between his
skull plate and scalp. Hopefully, he will only need to stay
overnight. We ask for your prayers for a safe and quick
surgery and shunt adjustment as well as safe travel and a
speedy recovery.
Mar. 15, 2004...
Mike remains at Care Have Center and continues with his
recovery. Currently, he is experiencing a collection of fluid
(called seroma) between his scalp and skull, in the area of his
incision. He has had, and will again have to have this fluid
removed by the NeuroSurgeon. We are hoping and praying that
this will subside as it is a bit bothersome for Mike.
Mar. 11, 2004...
Mike, of course, still frequently has headaches and is
slowly trying to regain the progress he had made prior to the
cranioplasty. He remains paralysed on his left side
but on occasion is able to lift his left leg about 2-3
inches. He loves to hear from his friends and family and looks
forward to phone calls and visits. Thanks so much for your
continued concern.
Mar. 7, 2004...
Mike has all of his staples out now and continues to heal relatively
well. He has resumed a little therapy, pretty much daily and
is working slowly to get back to the level where he was when he left
Rehab. He's been a bit depressed lately, but all-in-all is
doing good. If you would like his phone number to give him a call,
please mail me at BigMikesMessages@aol.com
Mar. 2, 2004...
Yesterday, Mike had half of his staples out when his nurse
removed every other one. (He had 50 in his scalp and 12 in his
stomach) Since that seemed to go well, the rest were removed
today. He still has some puffiness at his incision sites,
but he seems to be healing well. He continues to enjoy visits
from friends & family and his attitude seems to be
improving. Thank you for your continued prayers and
support.
Feb. 28,
2004... Mike continues to do well in his
recovery. He has settled into his new room at Care Haven and
enjoys visits most days from his friends. This has an awesome
impact on his spirits and we really appreciate those friends who
remain close and committed. God Bless!
Feb. 23, 2004...
Mike was moved out of NS-ICU to a private room yesterday morning and
was discharged from Winchester Medical Center this afternoon.
He has returned to Care Haven Center, but is in a different room
this time, 32B. He's doing well and would love to hear from
you.
Feb. 22, 2004...
Mike continues to do well in his recovery. He is without
bandaging now and taking less medications for pain. He's still
a bit tired but doing OK. He will likely move out of NS-ICU
today. Will keep you posted.
Feb. 20, 2004...
Mike is doing well. His bandaging was reduced and he was
allowed to view himself today. He is experiencing some pain
and fatigue. His spirits are pretty good. He had a
little therapy today to stretch his limbs and he sat up in his
wheelchair for about an hour. He currently remains in
NS-ICU. Thanks to everyone for their
concern.
Feb. 19, 2004...
Mike's Doctor said that the surgery went well. Mike is
stable and is currently in NS-ICU. He will not be receiving
visitors while he is in NS-ICU this time. He is quite
uncomfortable and in pain. He is also not yet entirely
conscious, etc. We will keep you posted here of any
news. Thank you for your concern and prayers.
Feb. 18,
2004... OK folks, tomorrow is the big day. Mike
was admitted to WMC late this morning and will have his cranioplasty
at 7:30am. This surgery will take several hours. He
should be out of surgery by noon, but I will not be
updating until probably around 6pm tomorrow. We appreciate
your thoughts and prayers for Mike, our family and the surgeons,
nurses and staff.
Feb. 15,
2004... Mike is doing pretty well. He has been
having visitors consistently, which helps to keep his spirits
lifted. He has been having a little therapy each
day. Mike has begun purposefully moving his left leg. It
is just a small lifting movement, but it is on command and not
just reflex. As you can imagine, this is very
encouraging!
Feb. 10, 2004...
Mike's cranioplasty has again been rescheduled. It is
currently set for 2/19. He will likely be admitted to Winchester
Medical Center a day or two in advance. We will keep you
posted. Please continue to remember Mike and his family and
friends in your prayers.
Feb. 4, 2004...
Mike is adjusting to his new surroundings. He seems to be a
little depressed and is being a bit lazy! Visitors who
help lift his spirits and give him encouragement to keep working
hard on his recovery are priceless. Mike needs all the help he
can get and a good cheering section to boot!
Jan. 30, 2004...
Mike is on the move again! Mike has been discharged from WRC
and now resides at Care Haven Center in Martinsburg WV. We are
working on getting his phone hooked up there. He is a bit
anxious, adjusting to his new surroundings and also regarding his
upcoming surgery. Please continue to remember Mike in your
prayers and now would be an awesome time to send him a card, etc. to
cheer him. (The mailing address is on the "NEWS" page)
Jan. 24, 2004...
Mike is on the move! Mike has been moved to a
different room at Winchester Rehab. He is now in Room 3316,
bed A. His phone number has also changed. You can call
his parents, or visit him to get his new number. Or you can request
it by email: BigMikesMessages@aol.com
Jan. 22, 2004...
Mike's place seems to be THE place to be this week as he
has had numerous visitors every evening so far this
week! He really enjoys the visits from his friends and
they also enjoy seeing Mike and his progress as well. We
certainly appreciate all of you who remain faithful friends.
God Bless!
Jan. 18, 2004...
Mike's progress continues slowly. He has been doing better
with eating and has managed to gain back some of the weight he had
lost. We're happy about that as we want him to have a 'little extra
on hand' before going in for his cranioplasty. The surgery has
been rescheduled for Feb. 10th as the manufacturer of his skull
plate was unable to meet the original delivery date. (The surgery
was originally scheduled for Jan. 28th.)
Jan. 14, 2004...
After another adjustment to his medication, Mike moves ahead at a
slow pace of progress. His sense of humor and wit are
returning and he is beginning to have increased tone,
inflection and emotion in his voice and words. He logs on to
this website several times a day looking for new messages from
you. If you have a second, I hope you'll take the time to say
''HI" to him. To do so... (just click
here)
Jan. 9, 2004...
Mike has really brightened the last couple of days. I feel
that this is due to the several calls and visits that he
has had with friends this week. The support and
contact of caring friends is one of the best therapies for him
and I can always see a difference in him when his friends have taken
the time to call or visit. It's encouraging to see how
these visits always make such a positive impact on his
recovery and rehabilitation. I know that it is also
exciting and therapeutic for his friends as well, to be able to
'make a difference' in Mike's life.
Jan. 7,
2004... Mike has his second outing today, a visit to the
Dream Machine Arcade in the Apple Blossom Mall. This is the
Arcade where he is so well-known as he was Assistant Manager
there. Mike dreams of being able to return to work at the
Arcade someday. Wouldn't that be something? A big 'thank
you' to the Therapists, the Arcade and all of Mike's friends,
family and former co-workers for making this a special day. PHOTO
Jan, 4,
2004... Mike has gotten pretty good at logging on to this
website by himself. He likes to read the Messages that you
leave for him on the Message Board. You can click here to heave a
message for him today!
Jan. 3, 2004...
Mike has been in a good mood, talkative and very much
enjoying the visits and phone calls that he has received from
friends this week. He is looking forward to a
second outing this coming week. I have posted one
picture so far of his first outing which was to the bowling alley.

Mike was transported to Winchester Medical Center yesterday morning
where they made the CT Scans that will be used to custom
manufacture his skull plate. To learn more about skull plate
manufacture visit: http://snipurl.com/3lj6 The
cranioplasty is scheduled for Jan. 28th. You can learn about the

Dec. 27, 2003...
Mike had so much fun distributing the cookies that his Mom had baked
for Christmas, that he had exhausted his supply by Friday
noon. So, his Mom and Sister stayed up late that
night to bake some more which he got busy handing out on
Saturday. There is a picture of "Mike the Cookie Elf" on
the PHOTOS page. Season's Greetings
!!
Dec. 26,
2003... Last evening...Christmas...Mike received what
he had been asking Santa for when just after dinner, his Sister
walked into his room with a red bow stuck to her head and exclaimed
"Merry Christmas!" Mike, as well as his Parents, were quite
surprised by this visit, to say the least! We hope that you
are your family are having a blessed holiday too!

!
Dec. 24, 2003...
Mike is really enjoying the visits from his friends and the holiday
cards and gifts that some have brought as well. We wish
everyone a blessed and joyous holiday season and thank you for your
support and prayers.
Dec. 22, 2003...
Mike was very excited to talk about the visits he had today from
various people and the Christmas gifts he received today as
well. It is wonderful that several of his friends have been
able to make it by to visit with him. We cannot stress enough
how very important it is for Mike that his friends visit with
him. This is extremely important for his
memory. Mike has been in a hospital room or the
near equivalent of a hospital room for over 5 months as he has
suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury. If he's going
to remember you...he has to SEE you
either in person or by clear, large photographs.
We encourage his friends to visit as often as possible and to also
send photos as well. You can email a photo to: BigMikesMessages@aol.com.
If you would like to mail a photo by 'snail mail' just write a
quick email to this address and I will email you back with a postal
mailing address. Happy
Holidays!
Dec. 21, 2003...
Mike has been doing pretty well lately.
He's been eating a little more and
has been more talkative. He is looking forward to Christmas
and hoping that more of his friends will be able to stop by for a
visit for the holidays.
Dec. 19,
2003... Mike has been a bit more alert the last couple of
days since the last adjustment to his medication. He's been
eating a little better as well. He has been enjoying some
visits from friends and Santa. I hope all of his friends will
be able to make it by to see him before Christmas!
Dec. 17, 2003...
Well, after 5 months in captivity
:-) Mike got to see the streets of
Winchester again today. He was taken out by special transport,
by his therapists, to Northside Lanes. While there he narrowly
beat them in a friendly game of bowling. GO Mike !! PHOTO After dinner he had a
visit from a childhood friend. Visits do so very much for
him. Thank you to all of his friends who remain
supportive.
Dec. 16, 2003...
Mike had a fall today in therapy but he seems to be OK.
He seemed to be a little depressed on the phone this evening, but
sometimes it's not so easy to tell with him. If you can find a
few minutes in your busy holiday schedule, he sure would love a
visit from you. Trust me.
Dec. 14, 2003...
Mike has been doing better since the last adjustment to his
medication. He has been eating a little more the last couple
of days too. This makes us happy and should help him in his
quest to gain strength and be able to help more with his
transfers.
Dec. 12, 2003...
Mike seems to be losing the sluggishness that was plaguing him last
week. He is beginning to look forward to Christmas and wishing
for lots of visits from friends between now and then. He's
been working on standing up with the various therapy equipment each
day. Although he's far away from standing on his own, the use
of the equipment enables him to be able to put weight on his
legs. This helps him to gain strength and helps to
alleviate some of the pain in them.

Dec. 10, 2003... I
cleared the wall in Mike's room of all the birthday and get well
cards so that he can hang up all of his incoming Christmas
cards. Here is his mailing address: Mike
Heironimus - Room 3301, Winchester Rehabilitation Center, 333 West
Cork Street, Winchester VA 22601. He's doing a little
better today. A slight adjustment in his medications will
hopefully cause some of this sluggishness to go away and his
appetite to return.
Dec. 9, 2003...
Mike remains at Winchester Rehab for the time being.
He continues with various therapies there. He's a little
sluggish and somewhat weak lately. We think perhaps because he
barely eats and is losing lean muscle mass at a rate which we are
not comfortable with. We don't exactly understand why that is,
but we're trying to find out. There are new pics on the "PHOTOS"
page.
Dec. 8, 2003...
Mike is OK today. He seems to be having some trouble
with very painful muscle cramps and spasms in his left leg and
hand. Unfortunately...pain often stops and/or delays
progress in other areas.
Dec. 7, 2003...
Mike continues to do pretty well and he had a visit from Santa this
morning. (click here to see
photo) Mike is finding it challenging to eat and drink
enough to properly sustain him. Please remember Mike in your
prayers and pray for him to gain strength.
Dec. 6, 2003...
Mike is enjoying the scenery outside his window of the snowy
day. He's doing well today. Ate pretty well and worked
out with the weights a little bit.
Dec. 5, 2003...
Mike is better today and we're glad to see his appetite return after
2 days of it's absence. He did a little more bowling today and is
looking forward to a visit from the therapy bunnies this
evening.
Dec. 4, 2003...
Mike is a little brighter today than yesterday, but still somewhat
subdued. He worked on the rowing machine and with the therapy
dog "Sofie" a bit today.
Dec. 3,
2003... Mike is a bit tired and sluggish today.
Some days are better than others, but that's true for all of us
isn't it? He played a little BINGO this evening with his Dad
& Sis.
Dec. 2, 2003...
Mike had a bright and busy day. He showed his Sister how he
stands in the "pulpit" for almost 20 minutes. Wow...is this
ever difficult and painful for him. After dinner he enjoyed a visit
from friends. He was very happy to have this visit and was quite
alert and into it.
Dec. 1,
2003... Mike continues with his rehabilitation.
He has been enjoying a little home cooking brought in by his Mother
and Sister.
Nov. 30,
2003... Mike will have therapy this afternoon.
Although Mike is very quiet and laid back, I cannot tell you how
very much he enjoys visits from his friends! The best times for
visiting around 6 pm weekdays and after 1 pm
weekends.
Nov. 29, 2003...
Mike had therapy this morning after breakfast where he lifted some
weights and worked a bit on the hand bike. He enjoyed a visit
from friends in the afternoon and had dinner with his Mom and
Sister. In the evening he sat up a bit and signed all of his
Christmas Cards! (I was impressed!)
Nov. 28, 2003...
Mike didn't have therapy yesterday as the therapists were all
enjoying a day off for Thanksgiving. So...like most Americans
celebrating Thanksgiving, Mike relaxed and watched TV most of the
day and enjoyed a turkey dinner with his family.
Nov. 27,
2003... HAPPY
THANKSGIVING! Mike won`t have therapy today because
of the holiday. He is doing better on eating skills and should be
able to enjoy some turkey today. In therapy they have been
working on transfers from and to wheelchair and back to bed. He has
been really enjoying visits from friends. We hope all of you have a
wonderful Thanksgiving Day and may God continue to
bless.
Nov. 26, 2003...
Mike seems to be in a good mood today. He had the stand up
box therapy today which is difficult for him but he tolerated it
okay. He ate at a different level table today where he enjoyed
some homemade vegetable soup that Mom made for him. This morning he
heard his name being lifted up in prayer on WTRM
radio.
Nov. 25,
2003... Mike maintains good vital
signs. His body weight continues to decrease which causes us
some concern. He still
works daily on strengthening his right side. The left side of his body
remains paralyzed and painful.
His speech therapy appears to be going well. He has a
very long way to go but we thank God for each little step of
improvement. Your
continued concern and support means so much to all of
us.
Nov. 24,
2003... Mike continues
to struggle with getting the strength back in his right side to help
him be able to assist more in his transfers from bed to his
wheelchair and back to bed. The therapists are a great bunch
of people and Mike responds to them and works with them pretty
well.
Nov. 23, 2003... I was just preparing a
Thanksgiving Day card for Mike and figured that you would like
to do the same ... so here is his mailing address: Mike
Heironimus - Room 3301, Winchester Rehabilitation Center, 333 West
Cork Street, Winchester VA 22601. Mike should have one
session of therapy today. The struggle to regain
strength is long and painful sometimes. We all appreciate
your concern and compassion.
Nov. 22, 2003...
Today Mike was doing some exercises to strengthen his right
arm. The therapists exercise his left arm for him. He has had
friends come to visit with him a couple of times this
week. This really makes such a difference in his mental
strength, mood and outlook. If you haven't been to visit Mike
yet, I encourage you to take the time to do so. Trust me...it
will be as good for you as it is for him.
Nov. 21, 2003...
Mike is working on learning to transfer from the wheelchair and then
back into it, etc. They are working on stretching and
strengthening his muscles and he continues with speech therapy as
well. We appreciate your prayers and thoughts so much!
Nov. 20, 2003...
Mike's neuro surgeon felt that he was doing well in the first stages
of a long recovery. He said that they will design a
custom plate to replace the missing portion of Mike's
skull. The cranioplasty (skull reconstruction
surgery) will not take place until after the first of the
year.
Nov. 19,
2003... Mike goes to his neuro surgeon today for a
check-up. He continues with therapy twice a day but his
progress has not reached the level we had all hoped for. If he
had use of the left side of his body, that would be a big
help.
Nov. 18,
2003... Mike's vital
signs, which include blood pressure, heart rate, temperature and
breathing still continue to be stable. He has had friends
visiting which helps up-lift his spirits. His various
therapies continue twice a day during the week and once a day on the
weekend. The therapy which works on him standing, is very
painful for him.
Nov. 17,
2003... Thankfully, Mike's vital signs have been quite
stable for a couple of weeks now. The therapy is
helping to strengthen his right side so he can help some as
they lift him to his wheelchair and back to bed. His
appointment with his Neuro surgeon was changed to Wednesday.
We'll keep you posted !
Nov. 16, 2003...
Mike was put in the stand-up box (nicknamed the
pulpit) again today in therapy. This is quite painful for him
but is necessary to help him strengthen his legs. He can only
stand in it for about 10 to 15 minutes. He does his best
and doesn't complain. He's such a sweetheart, you know.
:)
Nov. 15,
2003... Mike ate better today and seems to be in a good
frame of mind. He had several friends visit. He can have
visitors from 6 to 9 p.m. during the week and after 12
noon on the weekends. His therapy is going
well. Friday they put him in a 'standing box' for
awhile. This was very hard for him to do but he did pretty
well. Thank you so much for continued concern and
prayers.
Nov. 14,
2003... Mike's vitals are holding relatively steady.
The therapists give him coordination and strength exercises. His
progress is slow but he is showing some gains. Everyone has a good,
helpful and patient attitude. Please remember his caretakers
and therapists in your thoughts and prayers.
Nov. 13,
2003... Mike takes therapy in the morning and
afternoon. The left side needs special attention because
of the paralysis. They have been taping the left shoulder and left
leg to try to alleviate some of the pain and discomfort that he has
in those joints. When I was there this past weekend I hung up
alot of the get well, thinking of you and birthday cards that he has
gotten. They sure do help to bring some cheer to his
room. Thank you.
Nov. 12, 2003...
Mike is holding his own on good vital sign readings.
The therapists are expanding the different types of movements and
machines they use to help him try and recover more strength and
confidence.
Nov. 11,
2003... Mike's vital signs were good today. Also today, he
was able, for the first time since July 20th, to lay on his stomach
for a few minutes. The therapist and the staff are doing great
with Mike. Thanks to them and all of you who are praying for
us.
Nov. 10, 2003...
The therapists have taped Mike's left hip and shoulder to help keep
them in place and relieve pain. He still daily wears a
specially made brace for his left hand to keep his fingers
extended. His attitude has been good and he is starting to eat
and take liquids better.
Nov. 9, 2003...
Mike's vital signs are holding well. He ate good at lunch
today. The therapists are continuing to work on strengthening his
muscles and working with memory skills and communication. He
remains at Winchester Rehabilitation Center on Cork Street. No
decision yet on when to e-construct his skull.
Nov. 8, 2003...
Mike gets uncomfortable when he has to sit up in the wheelchair for
a period of time as his left hip is causing him pain when
sitting. The therapists are still working to get his
right side stronger. He eats his meals in the lunchroom
regularly now.
Nov. 7,
2003... Mike seems to be getting along okay without
the PEG tube. He is able to swallow his medications by
mouth. He had some of his friends visiting and that helps his
memory and lifts his spirits. He continues with the various
therapies. Thanks for your love, concern and
prayers.
Nov. 6,
2003... Mike had his PEG (stomach feeding tube)
removed yesterday afternoon. The Occupational Therapists continued
with exercises to strengthen his right arm and leg. The Speech
Therapist is helping him with reading, memory, math skills, chewing
and swallowing. His vital signs were good this morning.
Nov. 5, 2003... Mike seemed a
little more talkative and relaxed last night. His heart
rate and blood pressure have improved. The Doctor is talking
about removing the stomach feeding tube soon.
Nov. 4, 2003... Check out the new
pics on the "PHOTOS" page.
Nov. 3, 2003... Mike's status is
about the same. His heart rate and blood pressure go up some with
therapy. The therapists work with him daily to try to
strengthen his right side arm and leg. His body is slowly
adjusting to the new medication which makes him somewhat
sluggish.
Nov. 2, 2003... Mike's vital signs
are good and his therapy went well today. He seems less energetic
with the new medications but it has brought the blood pressure and
heart rate down from their elevated levels. Please continue
praying for some movement of his left side.
Nov. 1, 2003... Mike's vital
signs were good this morning. His headaches and nausea problem
have improved. He will have limited therapy over the weekend.
Mike is still receiving cards etc for both his birthday and
Hallowe'en and we wish to again extend our thanks for your
thoughtfulness.
Oct. 31, 2003... Mike's heart rate
and blood pressure are doing well with the new medication. He
has not had nausea for several days. He continues with
therapy. Happy Hallowe'en!
Oct. 30, 2003... Mike's vital signs
have improved with medication. He is receiving speech,
occupational and physical therapies daily. His progress is
slow. There is still no response on his left side. He is
uncomfortable and in pain most of the time.
Oct. 29, 2003... Mike had several
visitors for his birthday. He received wishes, gifts, cards,
balloons, a cake and ice cream and some live singing and music
too! I hope to have a photo or 2 for you soon. Mike is
slowly increasing his food intake. The nausea problem has
improved. His heart rate and blood pressure have gone down a bit.
The therapists are still working with him to help overcome his
muscle weakness from being confined to bed for so long.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to make Mike's birthday
special.
Oct. 28, 2003... Happy Birthday to Mike, Happy Birthday to Mike,
Happy Birthday Dear Miiiiike, Happy Birthday to Mike !!!!
=o) Be sure
to dig out your pointy paper party hat and stop by the Rehab
Center to visit Mike today!! - Mike's stomach problem seems to be improved. He is
taking some food by mouth again. His heart rate and blood
pressure are still a bit elevated. The various therapists are
working to help him regain strength and stimulate his thinking and
memory.
Oct. 27, 2003... Mike rested well
last night. The stomach problem seems to have
stabilized. They removed the IV and will start light liquid
feeding by mouth today. Doctors will analyze data today to try to
determine what caused the stomach problem this time. Please
continue prayers for Mike and all those that take care of
him.
Oct. 26, 2003... Mike had a
restful night. He was given an upper GI yesterday and will remain on
IV until at least tomorrow. His vital signs elevate a little
during activity. He is alert and talkative.
Oct. 25, 2003... Mike has had a
problem with stomach upset for the past couple days. He has been put
back on IV feeding. He will be sent over to the hospital for an
upper GI test today.
Oct. 24, 2003... Mike is having a
problem with vomiting again. The reason for this is
not yet known. He is undergoing tests and X-rays at this time
to try to find the cause. He is unable to take food by mouth
for the last couple of days and they have resorted back to IV to
sustain him for now. We HOPE this problem will pass quickly.
He rested well last night and had some limited therapy today.
Oct. 23, 2003... They are continuing
both feeding and medication by mouth. This seems to be working
better now. Yesterday Mike was put in the whirlpool for a while
and also had therapy using the tilt table. He did have a little
trouble with nausea today. Not sure if it is coming from the
activity or a new medication that was started yesterday. When
is the last time you checked out the "MESSAGES" page?
Oct. 22, 2003... Mike was a bit
queezy yesterday as they attempted to start medicating him by mouth
rather than by PEG. This didn't go so smoothly unfortunately
and as a result he missed out on having much physical therapy.
The Occupational therapist worked with him on other skills
though instead. Reminder: Mike's birthday is coming
soon! Mike will be 26 on Tuesday Oct. 28th! If you wish
to send a card, etc...his mailing address is: Mike Heironimus
- Room 3301, Winchester Rehabilitation Center, 333 West Cork Street,
Winchester VA 22601. Big pictures and words and bright colors
are easier for him to see. Be sure to be clear about who
you are, etc.
Oct. 21, 2003... Mike rested well
last night and had no nausea. They have started giving him
medications by mouth and have stopped the night feeding into the
tube into his stomach. He is continuing with various therapies
and is enjoying being out of Isolation and having visitors.
Oct. 20, 2003... Mike had some
therapy today in the therapy room where they worked on stretching
his left arm and having him to stand for a few moments on his right
leg. He spent over 2 hours sitting in his wheelchair and
had lunch and dinner in the dining room. They are going to try
to stop the tube feedings and depend on mouth feeding. Mike
had several visitors today and this really does alot to lift his
spirits and stimulate his memory.
Oct. 19, 2003... Mike continues with
therapy to gain strength and attempt to overcome the paralysis of
his left side. His vital signs tend to become
somewhat elevated with physical activity.
He rested well last night and we are trying to get him to
eat more solid food. We hope you will find time to send Mike a
card or note to: Mike Heironimus - Room
3301, Winchester Rehabilitation Center, 333 West Cork Street,
Winchester VA 22601. Big pictures and words and bright colors
are easier for him to see. Be sure to be clear about who
you are, etc. Thanks !!!
Oct. 18, 2003... Mike had a busy day
yesterday. His therapists had him sitting up in his
wheelchair for about 3 hours. Then, because his Isolation
has been lifted and he can now leave his room, he had his lunch
in the lunch room and some therapy in a therapy room.
The increase in therapy is also to help his body to recover from
being bed-ridden for so very long. Of course, all of this
activity caused a slight elevation in his vital signs. It also
tires him out! :)
Oct. 17, 2003... If you've read the
new notice above, then you know that the news of the day is
that Mike has been cleared of infections and has been taken off of
Isolation Status!! His vital signs remain good and he
continues with therapy every day. He receives Occupational as
well as Physical Therapy as he learns how to do things again.
The Occupational Therapists currently work with him on things like
speech, eating/chewing/swallowing and memory. One thing that
is going to help his memory tremendously is if you go to visit
him. He needs to SEE you to remember you. Please read
the above notice concerning visitation. Thanks!!
Oct. 16, 2003... Mike's nausea
problems have improved since he started taking food by mouth.
Vital signs continue to hold good. He is also resting better
at nights with some sleep medication. Left side paralysis is a
concern.
Oct. 15, 2003... Mike continues in
his journey to recovery and rehabilitation. It's a long, tough
road. One best traveled with supportive friends and
family. I want to thank those friends who have taken time to
stop and visit with Mike this week.
Oct. 14, 2003... Mike is experiencing
pain and discomfort in his left arm and leg. His left shoulder
seems to be bothering him quite a bit these days. The
therapists continue to work with his left side daily and have also
made a brace for his left arm, but not alot of good news on that
side yet .
Oct. 13, 2003... Mike is doing about
the same. He continues with therapy during the day and is
working on learning to eat on his own. It's a slow process but
he makes a little progress here and there. He needs your
support very much.
Oct. 12, 2003... Mike has been resting a
little better at nights. He has been eating a little more and
the night-time early feeding thru the stomach peg has been set
back 4 hrs. He is scheduled for Occupational therapy today. The
tilt table exercise yesterday went to a 50
degree angle. Mike would like to
hear from you! You can send him a card or letter,
etc....to: Mike Heironimus - Room
3301, Winchester Rehabilitation Center, 333 West Cork Street,
Winchester VA 22601. Big pictures and words and bright colors
are easier for him to see. Be sure to be clear about who
you are, etc. Thanks !!!
Oct. 11, 2003... Mike had a good night and his vital signs were OK this
morning. He should have some physical therapy today. His
left side is still not functional. They will be putting
him on the tilt table again today as well. He went
outside for a couple of minutes yesterday. They took him in a
wheelchair to get a little fresh air.
Oct. 10, 2003... Mike had a restful night. His vital signs are good. He
ate about half of his breakfast this morning. They are putting
him on a tilt table today try to get him used to the idea of
attempting to stand. Also to put some weight on his legs to add
to his strength, etc. His left shoulder has been taped to help
ease pain and they have made a brace for his left
forearm, wrist and hand. Please pray for Mike and the
therapists as they work together on his
recovery.
Oct. 9, 2003... Mike rested well last
night. Presently hoping and working to increase
the amount of food he will eat by mouth feeding. Mike is taking
physical therapy and spends some time each day sitting in a
wheelchair. He is still in Isolation at this time. Please continue
to pray for improvement especially for his left side.
Oct. 8,
2003... Mike had a reasonably good night. He continues
taking some food by mouth. The therapist made an arm brace for his
left forearm, wrist and hand. They have again changed his bed so
they can now use a lift to get him into a wheelchair easier since it
takes several of them to lift and transfer him. Please continue
to pray for return of use of the left side of his
body.
Oct. 7, 2003...
Mike seems to be adjusting to his new surroundings and new
staff, therapists, doctors, etc. He continues taking some food
by mouth along with machine feedings directly into his stomach. Mike
still needs to be lifted, moved and balanced by a team of therapists
to sit up. He can sit on the edge of his bed on his own for a
few moments. He also sits in a wheelchair for a little
while each day, he is not able to sit in the wheelchair on his own,
however. Attempts at standing are a long way away...and
hopes of walking again are only but a distant dream at this
point in time. But....we do not give up hope of what Mike may
be able to accomplish some day. He is certainly a
miracle by the mere fact that he has survived thus
far. Mike has no control or purposeful movement of the left
side of his body from head to toe. At this time, he remains on
isolation status, but he needs to hear from you.
--> A lot and often.
Oct. 6, 2003...
Mike rested well last night. His nausea condition seems to
be improving. He is eating some by mouth. His vital signs are
good. He is still unable to move his left side. At
present he remains in isolation, we hope that status to change
soon.
Oct. 5, 2003...
Mike's vital signs are still holding
well. They/we continue to work with Mike to get him to take
food by mouth. Please pray about his left side as so far it
doesn't seem to be responding to therapy. He remains in
isolation. We appreciate your
support.
Oct. 4,
2003... Mike's vital signs are still holding pretty
good. He took some purreed food by mouth yesterday evening and a
small amount of egg this morning. He will have limited therapy
today. He is still in isolation and as I mentioned yesterday, would
love to hear from you :) (if you need
his mailing address...email me at BigMikesMessages@aol.com and I will
email it to you.)
Oct. 3,
2003... Mike's vital signs were good this morning. He
was somewhat unsettled for part of the night but was able to
settle down a bit and get some rest. He continues with daily
therapies and is eating a little bit of food by mouth now. He
is still on isolation status for the time being but would certainly
love to receive a card or note in the mail from you! (if
you need his mailing address...email me at BigMikesMessages@aol.com
and I will email it to you.)
Oct. 2,
2003... Mike slept well during the night with seemingly no
nausea and no vomiting. (hooray!) He had some meds for
headache and had a pretty restful night. Yesterday he had
therapy where he worked on re-learning his balance and was able to
sit on the edge of his bed for a few minutes on his own. He is
also learning to turn himself in bed a little bit.
Mike is still unable to move his left side. The therapists also
worked with moving his left arm and leg which causes him pain, but
is necessary. Mike really needs the support of his friends!
Thanks for your concern.
Oct. 1, 2003... Yesterday, day 72...Mike was
finally discharged from Winchester Medical Center
and admitted to Winchester Rehabilitation Center. He
was somewhat restless during the night there and received medication
for pain and to calm him. He had no nausea during the
night. He will begin therapy there today. I still need
your help with the project posted on the "NEWS" page !!
Thanks!

day. We are expecting him to be moved to rehab soon, possibly
today.

continues on nausea medication. They are still attempting daily
liquid feedings by mouth and continuing the night time feeding by
stomach tube. He should have therapy again today. His overall
condition appears about the same. Many thanks to all you

2003... Mike's BP and temperature are good this
morning. However, his heart rate remains elevated. Mike has
contracted yet another infection and has now been put on Isolation
status. He will receive a new antibiotic starting today. Please
continue to pray for Mike and our family. My parents
have been sick with colds and have been unable to visit
him for several days. Please read the above notice
regarding visitation as it has changed. Thank
you!
Sept. 24, 2003...
Mike's BP and temperature are good this morning but his heart
rate is still a bit high. He had no vomiting during the
night. He remains on antibiotics and medicine for nausea.

swallowing with liquid test today. They removed the trache
yesterday morning. That seemed to go well and he is adjusting to
that at this time as well. Please check the "NEWS" page. I really need
your help with the project posted there! Thank
you!
